Oliver Middlemiss

Oliver was a family man and much loved son, brother, husband, father, colleague and friend.

He was the youngest of three brothers. He was a rural chartered surveyor and spent much of his professional life as a factor in estates in Scotland and England. Outside of work his family was the love of his life with two sons William and Angus and Jess his wife. He was an avid sportsman with golf, cricket and Tottenham Hotspur being his main passions.

All who knew him were struck by his warmth, wit and personable manner.

Despite this effervescent character, his OCD was a dark shadow. It was characterised by obsessive and intrusive thoughts with further mental compulsions rather than physical compulsions. Because of this - like so many others - it was something that he was tormented with privately before even being able to share the burden and seek help. Even once he did have psychiatric help, the disease worsened and many medications with either ineffective or the side effects intolerable. He took his own life on the 14th of July 2019.

Despite our grief and loss, his family and friends would like to be able to try to use his death in a positive way - by encouraging research into OCD to better understand the disease, improve clinical knowledge of it and to ultimately reduce the suffering of those in the future who have a diagnosis of OCD.

Oliver Middlemiss, so dearly loved and missed. This is for you and for those like you - now and in the future.
